We are governed by the Legislative Assembly, which is made up of 17 Members (MLAs) from three constituencies – Brindabella, Ginninderra and Molonglo. Every four years we elect MLAs to represent us and make decisions on our behalf.
Members of the Legislative Assembly elect a Chief Minister who then selects up to five ministers to form a cabinet. The leader of the second-largest party in the assembly usually becomes the Leader of the Opposition.
The ACT Government has responsibility for state/territory functions such as health, education and the administration of justice as well as local government functions such as roads, libraries and waste collection.
